A CRICKLADE-based charity that provides solar powered lighting for schools in developing countries has been given £17,000.

Roger Mugridge, from the Lights For Learning charity, recently visited Harrogate School, in Yorkshire, accompanied by his wife Jean.

There they were presented with a cheque for £17,176 from the students.

“We were overwhelmed,” said Roger. “This will really help our forthcoming trip to Zambia. All the schools we help don’t have electricity and use kerosene lights made from old tin cans.”

Demand for education is so great once the solar lighting is fitted it is not unusual for lessons to continue until 10pm.

If you or a local school are interested in finding out more about Lights for Learning please contact Roger on 01793 750844 or visit www.lightsforlearning.org.

"Demand for education" is a luvvie duvvie feeling for us in the West, and gives us a feel good experience. In reality, it is the knowledge that education means money - so let's just say how it is - "Wanting money"
People in poverty work hard! But once they experience a benefit state, they fall back and take advantage. The poles in England are such a classic example of having a 'work hard' reputation, but now they know about the welfare state, it's a case of bring all the family across and take the state for a ride.
