Get it Sorted: Safety fear over door

By James Wallin »

A YOUNG mum has said she fears for her safety due to the entrance to the block of flats where she lives being permanently open.

Twenty-year-old, Kerry Yates, has complained to the council on numerous occasions about the back door of the building on Allington Road in Penhill.

The door does not close properly and leaves the property open for anyone to enter.

Kerry, who has a 10-week-old baby, said she is fed up with finding strangers in the building when she comes home.

She said: "There are kids in these flats and it's not right that it isn't secure.

"I've contacted the council seven or eight times and they always say they're going to do something about it but they never do.

"Last week some council workmen came round and we all assumed they must be fixing the problem.

"But all they did was fit a new handle. The door is still open to anyone.

"I've found needles and all sorts of drug stuff on the floor it¹s not right."

In yesterday's paper we reported how Dave Collier was assaulted by youths who had gained entry to the Milverton Court block of flats in Park North.

Mr Collier had complained several times over an 18-month period that the door entry system was permanently on trade, allowing anyone access, and the story had even been featured in a previous Adver article.

A spokeswoman for Swindon Council said: "We sympathise with residents of Allington Road and share their frustration with the situation, which is unfortunately the result of repeated vandalism.

"The back door lock has been fixed on numerous occasions, including on Friday, August 15, only for it to be broken by people forcing their entry.

"Kerry Yates can be assured that we are responding to her calls highlighting the problem - maintenance staff fixed the door again on Monday, August 18.

We are also looking into replacing the lock with a more robust alternative.

"With reference to reports of drug taking, we will inform the police and work with them, if necessary, to help resolve the problem."

My thoughts exactly. Not the brightest move to advertise the fact.

How is this unsafe exactly? Lots of people have their names and adresses on the internet. I hope the council sorts this fast. It's a shame when a local paper has to report on these faults in order to get them sorted.

Mum, having read and admired many of you posts, I think you are being a tad naive, this is like putting a note in a milk bottle saying, 'No milk I'm away for two weeks', you might as well write 'dear burglar please feel free to enter my house I'm away'.

You are of course right that it is totally wrong that things get done following stories like this rather than as a matter of routine.

Someone has kicked her back door in?

I thought it was the main access door to the block of flats? She will still have a front door in addition?

A very, very bad move - especially when you have children. You should ideally never publish any personally identifying information on the Internet.

Would you hang a sign on your front door giving your full name and date of birth?

Um, not tried that, although I have put a note on it saying "Bec's creche come on in!" attached to a list of summer rules :D And... when we all have a tummy bug, my neighbour begs me to put a big red cross on it so that her kids stay away lol!

I'm sorry, I am rambling and I have gone off topic and oh god I will do anything to get out of tidying up this tip! Im gonna do it now... I really am :) Bye don't work too hard. Oh and are you going to come out for a drink with us? We could go to Longs :) I have asked Lord B and Emmy and any other regular posters? Would be cool to have a get together. Bob?

Strangely enough I was in Long's the other day before my press conference. Haven't been in for ages, not a lot has changed except the price of food, not cheap is it, or is it just where it is.

No it's not cheap, but as you say, I guess the location is one of the reasons. Also, you do seem to get quite a lot for your money and the wine is quite reasonable :)

MTW - you owe me a kiss anyway from way back as I recall and for comparing you and Lord B as Lancelot and Guinevere so why not make it easy and go to the Carpenters Arms in South Marston - there's a very nice man called Bobfm who runs it - I'll happily play taxi driver- we could all have a bit of scram and a chin wag!

oops forgot to post re topic - can't blame SBC on this one - apart from finding a more secure lock but then the little bar stewards will bust that eventually - its a bit like cleaning the graffiti wall for them to spray all over again!

I have never been to the carpenters arms - scandalous I know.
I'm bored someone entertain me

A free weekend Emmy? Surely not! ;) I'd be quite honoured to come, methinks. Always nice to see the faces behind the names - haven't been disappointed so far!

Given that I'm in Longs more often than I'm not, that wouldn't be too hard to arrange.

Bobfm, you're right, neither the food nor drink is particularly cheap at Longs. Which, I for one, am very thankful of.

If you want two meals for a fiver (seriously, what is that **** made from?) and a pint for £1.95, there are plenty of places at the bottom of town for that.

So where are we going guys??? Longs or Carpenters Arms???

Let's have a vote :)

Last time I was outside Longs, I was insulted by 3 or 4 drunken hooligans falling out the door.

Go there again? No ta. I do, quite honestly, see better behaviour at the bottom of town.

I have been to longs lots of times and to the bottom of town a couple of times and never had any prob with either (perhaps I was lucky!)It's macdonalds, a kids restaurant where we seem to have probs (in process of writing blog about it.)

Big mac would you consider a little jaunt over to the Carpenters Arms? That would be a compromise??
